AUDIO CONSTRUCTION
STEREO HEAD-UNIT MOUNTING
As the stock stereo has been removed
to accommodate the LCD touch screen, I chose to still keep
a Stereo head-unit. That way, even if the CarPC is not switched on you
still have an In Car Entertainment system.
I decided to mount the single DIN head-unit in a Gauge Pod which Subaru retails as an after market add-on. This is purchasable at any Subaru dealer ship for around £70 in the UK. The Part number for this pod is H0010FE920OE.
To convert the Imprezas vehicle wiring from the factory head-unit to an ISO standard loom, you will need an Autoleads car harness adaptor part number PC2-44-4.
Only a little modification by filing was required for the head-unit to fit in the Gauge Pod opening at the front of the plastic housing. It actually fits in the lower aluminium chassis very well.
The following slides shows the various components of this pod and how it is constructed and built up. Click HERE to view Stereo head-unit mounting.
SPEAKER UPGRADE
I like most decided to upgrade from the stock speakers to something a little more refined. After much thread searching I formed the opinion that Infinity speakers were the best. This was based on their quality, reputation, price and overall ease of fitment.
I did not want to alter the cars doors panels in anyway, so have decided on Infinity 5012i (coaxial reference) speakers for the rear doors and Infinity 6512si (coaxial shallow mount) reference speakers for the fronts.
These speakers have the normal 'spade' type connectors for connection to the existing speaker loom. Again to ease fitment and to avoid cutting into the existing loom I went for Autoleads PC2-808 Speaker Adaptor Leads. These connect to the speakers and the plug on the end fits onto the existing vehicles loom. At the time of purchase these were available from http://www.incardiscount.co.uk just search from PC2-808.
The final stage of construction was fitting the speakers to the door. Some people decide to make their own MDF speaker spacer. Generally a spacer is required to allow the new speakers to fit onto the door skin. Again based on other peoples experiences I ordered a speaker mounting kit from the US which is designed for the Subaru Impreza range. The company is http://www.iaperformance.com and a link to the product page can be found HERE or an overview of the product HERE
For those who prefer to make their own MDF spacers, here is a generic spacer template.
With
thanks to Ian Mitchell ('Granby' from Kent Scoobies) for the following
template design.
This template will allow you to make a 6.5" MDF speaker mount suitable for
fitment into Subaru Imprezas.
